First Baptist Church will launch a new church logo and new ministry logos on Sunday, October 12. Many of you are probably saying, “Didn’t we just do that?!! Why are we doing it again after such a short period of time?” Let me answer those questions for you and tell you the heart behind what we are doing as a church….

The logo that we have now (see picture below) was established over two years ago when Dr. Brunson came to First Jax…I know, hard to believe that it has been over two years, right?! We have struggled with this logo for some time, mostly on our broadcast side. Even with these struggles, we were not ready to change anything…we were working through them. However, in talking with the architects about renovations, they suggested that we come up with ministry logos that all had the same size, shape & appeal so that we could develop adequate signage for guests that arrive on campus. It would develop ministry branding but also be consistent and easy to read and recognize.

As many of you know, our campus is overwhelming to guests who are stepping foot here for the first time. We want to make this process easier, more manageable and with easy to recognize signs – we could make this a more pleasant experience for them as they navigate on our 11-block campus.

Once we were on board with creating all new ministry logos, we felt that this was the appropriate time to make a transition with the church logo as well. We spent many hours in creative meetings – praying that God would lead us in the direction of His will. Art can be very subjective and we are constantly trying to remove “ourselves” from the equation and create something that works for the needs of the church and the direction that God is leading.

One of our team members was walking through the Main Auditorium Lobby during the week and noticed the pattern the sun made on the carpet as it was shining through the windows of our church during late afternoon hours. He began thinking about the window look and the logo we previously had as a church (see below).

We have such a great heritage at this church…I grew up here under Dr. Lindsay, Jr. and Dr. Vines so I can say that first hand. We began to discuss how we might take that look and update it and still communicate a “cutting-edge” feel so that as we look toward future generations, we can carry this forward over time. This is the new logo that developed out of those conversations:

As you begin to see this new logo appear on publications, on the screens, on our broadcast – I have a few things I want you to think about:

No matter what side of the window you stand on…God is moving or God has moved among His people through this church. If you are outside, looking in, the history of a faithful flock will allow you to see the great things that God has accomplished through His people. If you are inside, looking out on a lost world, you will see how much more work we have to do in the future but what an exciting feeling that is that God’s work is not done and He has placed special gifts in each one of us for His greater plan!

I am humbled to be part of this staff and honored that I can be part of reaching today’s culture…we are stepping into a new time as a church and I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what HE will do!
